Powerball

I have never played the lottery before the other day when Eugene talked my wife into buying a power ball ticket.  It reminded me of a professional development session I attended 15 years ago when the speaker asked a group of 100 teachers how many would stay on the job if they hit the lottery.  My hand and one other person's went up.  I was truly amazed.

So as I went to purchase the power ball tickets I thought to myself what would happen if I won.  The first thing I thought about is that I would go to work the next day and continue to finish out the year.  My obligation to my students would not change, but would I continue to teach after this year?

It took me a second to come to the answer of yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I would continue to definitely teach.  My first move would be to ask our former AP Calc teacher how much would it cost to get her back in our school.  After that was done I wondered would I stay at my school or open an alternative school where I can embrace my educational philosophies.

While the alternative school would be interesting, the truth is that we as a country need to find a way to make public education work.  So I continue to think the best way for me to give back is to embrace public education.  So besides having fun giving money to the charities of my choice I do not think Power Ball would change my life at all.

So I have to ask, how would your life change if you won Power Ball?  Have some fun answering this question.

  1. It was so moving to read what you'd do with the money! And yet, I'm not surprised.

  2. Well, now that you mention it, Mr. Bressler, my new lottery idea is definitely bribing Ms. Weber into coming back to Dulaney :) And I agree with Christine 100%!

  3. How would my life change if I won the powerball? I'm not sure... I don't know if I would notice too much at first. I would still be thinking short term, like "I have a math test tomorrow!" Or "wow rehearsal was da bomb today!"

  4. I found it interesting when you said that most of the teachers would leave their jobs. I always wonder why people say they would immediately leave their jobs if they didn't need the money anymore. I personally would feel bored and even useless if I wasn't doing anything or contributing to society in any way. Wouldn't they get bored after a certain point? The same goes for retirees. I would get soooooo bored after the first month of not working. Even when we're on spring or winter break, I notice myself getting very antsy. Of course winning the lottery would be amazing I don't think I would drop everything.

  5. thanks for taking the time to respond. I think that people might continue to work but do something that they enjoy, like a hobby.

I think that one of the reasons education is important so you can control your own destiny and pursue a job that you have a passion for.

  6. If I won, the second I get my hands on enough money to pay my deposit, I would commit to my dream school that I can't rationally attend because of financial reasons. Acquiring such a large sum of money would mean that I could follow my dreams, take a risk on the major I love instead of the major that I hate but guarantees me a job and a six figure starting salary. It would give me a chance to make decisions based on happiness and passion instead of only logic.
I would set up a fund to pay for the tuition of anyone else who needs it. Education is indeed the most important part of moving forward as society, and it's being hindered by all of those who are unable to attend college at all (not because of personal fault but because they were not fortunate enough to be given a circumstance where they can afford it) or are just tolerating a school they hate because they can't afford the school that they love, got in to, and would help them reach their full potential. Even after taxes and the divisions of shares, I'm pretty sure there would be enough money to provide enough money for undergrad for at least a generation of students who need it.
